The Pagan Socialist Democratic Caucus affirms that every person possesses the fundamental right to freedom of religion, spirituality, belief, and conscience. We believe that all individuals must be free to follow a faith, explore a spiritual path, change their beliefs, practice no religion, or decline religious affiliation without fear of discrimination, persecution, or government-imposed coercion.

Religious freedom is an essential component of a free and democratic society. It protects the individual's right to determine their own spiritual and philosophical convictions while ensuring that no government, institution, or religious authority may compel another person to adopt a particular faith or abandon their sincerely held beliefs.

The Pagan Socialist Democratic Caucus recognizes that the spiritual landscape of our nation encompasses an extraordinary diversity of traditions, including Pagan and Indigenous spiritualities, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and other religious traditions, as well as humanism, atheism, agnosticism, and other nonreligious philosophies. We affirm the equal dignity of people across this diversity and reject the notion that any individual should receive greater or lesser civic rights because of their religious identity or lack thereof.

Our commitment to religious freedom rests upon the following principles:

Every person has the right to determine their own religious, spiritual, or philosophical convictions. Individuals must be free to embrace a faith, maintain an existing tradition, explore different spiritual paths, convert to another religion, leave a religious community, or hold no religious beliefs whatsoever. No person should be compelled by the government to profess, practice, or renounce a particular belief.

We support the right of individuals and religious communities to worship, observe sacred days, conduct ceremonies, maintain spiritual traditions, and gather for religious purposes, subject to neutral laws necessary to protect public safety and the rights of others. Religious practices should not be unfairly restricted simply because they are unfamiliar, unpopular, or outside the traditions of the majority.

We reject religious discrimination, persecution, and favoritism by government institutions. No religion should be granted superior civic status, nor should any faith or nonreligious worldview be treated as inherently less deserving of protection. We support the equal application of constitutional protections and nondiscrimination principles to religious and nonreligious individuals alike.

We affirm the importance of maintaining a government that neither establishes an official religion nor interferes unjustly with the free exercise of religion. Public institutions must serve people of all faiths and those without religious affiliation. Government authority should not be used to impose religious doctrine, privilege one spiritual tradition over another, or deny individuals equal citizenship because of their beliefs.

We recognize that religious people have the same right as other citizens to participate in public debate, advocate for policies, and hold public office. However, government decisions must remain accountable to constitutional principles and the equal rights of all people, rather than requiring adherence to a particular religious doctrine.

We recognize that minority faiths, including Pagan traditions and other less widely understood spiritual movements, may face prejudice, misinformation, harassment, or unequal treatment. We oppose discrimination directed at any religious community, regardless of its size, history, public perception, or degree of social acceptance.

We support the right of religious minorities to maintain their traditions, establish communities, access public services on equal terms, and participate fully in civic life. Religious freedom must protect minority beliefs as consistently as it protects majority beliefs.

Religious freedom includes the right to make personal decisions according to one's conscience, subject to applicable law and the rights of others. No person should be forced to disclose private spiritual beliefs unnecessarily, participate in religious observances against their will, or endure harassment because of their convictions.

We also recognize that freedom of conscience includes the right to disagree with religious teachings, question established doctrines, criticize religious institutions peacefully, and pursue personal spiritual development without fear of governmental retaliation.

We affirm that religious freedom is meaningful only when it includes the freedom to reconsider one's beliefs. Individuals must be free to convert, leave a religious organization, explore new traditions, or reject religion altogether. No person should be subjected to threats, violence, unlawful coercion, or the loss of basic civic rights because of such decisions.

We believe that people of different faiths and philosophies can coexist within a democratic society without surrendering their individual convictions. Respect for religious freedom does not require universal agreement; it requires recognition that differences in belief are not grounds for denying another person's dignity or rights.

We encourage respectful dialogue, cooperation across religious traditions, and peaceful engagement between religious and nonreligious communities. We oppose religious hatred, threats, and violence while defending the right to express beliefs and engage in peaceful disagreement.

As an organization rooted in the Pagan community, the Pagan Socialist Democratic Caucus recognizes the importance of protecting spiritual diversity within both public life and our own membership. We welcome individuals of diverse religious, spiritual, and nonreligious backgrounds who share our commitment to democracy, equality, freedom of conscience, and inclusive civic participation.

Membership and participation in the caucus should not require adherence to a particular theology, religious tradition, or spiritual practice. Our shared civic principles unite us while allowing each member to maintain their own beliefs and conscience.

We believe that our Pagan foundation provides a meaningful perspective on the importance of spiritual liberty, but we do not claim exclusive ownership of religious freedom or presume that all Pagans share identical beliefs. Our commitment extends equally to every person, whether their spiritual path is ancient or contemporary, widely practiced or uncommon, religious or nonreligious.

The Pagan Socialist Democratic Caucus maintains that religious freedom is not a privilege granted by the majority to those whose beliefs it approves. It is a fundamental liberty that must be protected for everyone, including those whose convictions differ from our own.

We stand for the right of every person to believe, worship, question, change, or disbelieve freely. We oppose religious persecution, governmental establishment of religion, discrimination based on faith, and any attempt to deny equal citizenship on the basis of spiritual or philosophical conviction.

Our vision is a democratic society in which no individual must hide their faith, abandon their conscience, or profess a belief they do not hold to enjoy the full protection of the law. We seek a nation where religious diversity is met with fairness, differences are addressed through peaceful dialogue, and the freedom of conscience is respected as an essential element of human dignity.

Faith. Freedom. Democracy.

Adopted as the official position of the Pagan Socialist Democratic Caucus on religious freedom, spiritual diversity, and freedom of conscience.
